The production of social robots (also known as inorganic people) is littered with ethical concerns. Even in their earliest conception, inorganic people have been conceived of as a simulacrum for organic people, or a means of reproduction without the need for a woman. The creation of inorganic people was both a demonstration of mastery over life by the creator, and a solution to a problem via the construction of labor. As technology advances, so to do the functionality, roles, and appearance of social robots. In order to improve human-robot-interactions, social robot designs have begun to lean more and more towards replicating the appearance and behaviors of organic people. As inorganic people begin to get closer to passing as organic, researchers have begun questioning the rights and protections for both organic and inorganic people. As inorganic people become more similar in ability and appearance to organic people the question of whether or not they have consciousness and sentients, and therefore should have basic human rights, becomes a pressing issue. Because - organic people do not regularly interact with social robots, this study uses fictional literature to explore the themes regarding issues of sexual agency assigned to inorganic people. These themes focus on romance and sexual behavior, but also include issues of gender and gender roles, as well as agency and consent. This study explores eight influential books from the early nineteenth century to the present day to track how writers conceptualized and informed society's expectations regarding inorganic people. Finally, I will conclude this study with a summation of the findings and their implications regarding the creation of social robots.
