This qualitative content analysis investigated representations of diverse voices in five years' worth of contemporary young adult texts awarded the Young Adult Library Services Association's (YASLA, 2020) Alex Award. Using Critical Race Theory in education (Dixson & Rousseau Anderson, 2018; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1995; Mabbott, 2017), Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (Dixson & Rousseau Anderson, 2018; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1995), and Transactional Theory (Rosenblatt, 1978, 1994, 2008) as theoretical underpinnings, this study examined Alex Award books by analyzing the authority of authors who write diverse young adult literature by determining their inclusion in, or their knowledge of, the groups they write about. This study also analyzed the authenticity of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ characters the authors may portray in their writings. The books in the study were evaluated using the Culturally Inclusive Text Rubric, adapted from Wilfong (2007), that measured the authority of the author as well as the portrayal of cultural authenticity through characterization, stereotyping, audience, language, setting, and theme. The findings of this study indicate that (1) Alex Awarded books represent many diverse populations, (2) Alex Awarded books authentically represent those diverse populations, and (3) stereotypes are present in many of the Alex Award books. The author uses these findings to argue for the importance of assessing reading materials for authority and authenticity, the continued representation of diverse groups, and the increased representation of authors and characters who are Latinx and authors and characters who have disabilities.
