Criminality is a highly complex phenomenon and when it comes to making valid assessments, it is imperative to understand that there are many factors that are acknowledged to affect criminal behavior. Many researchers in criminology have proposed various theoretical perspectives as possible explanations for the phenomenon. Over the years, these various theories about criminality have created competing paradigms in criminological research as each offers a very different set of ideas and explanations. Some of the most recognized theoretical perspectives include classical/rationalistic, biological essentialist, and social constructionist.
