This thesis is to investigate how architectural space mediates between different uses and groups of people, and identifies the boundaries of cross-generational groups so as to alleviate the problems of isolation and exclusion in society. Through exploring the personal habits and social behavior of these disparate groups, I propose a new architectural model to promote this equity.Equity is defined as a state where all people, irrespective of their racial diversity, gender, age or ethnic grouping, have fair and access to the resources and benefits of society. Social inequality is a problem that has long been debated by sociologists. This phenomenon of social exclusion and segregation depends on the clear boundary that divides and defines the difference between "us" and "them". The new architectural model I propose can be used as a way to enhance empathy and blur boundaries as transparency is adjusted. This proposal will redefine an architectural space in response to the requirements of segmentation of an aging population by exploring and distinguishing the social, spatial, and emotional needs of cross-generational groups. I intend to create a new framework of social equity for an active cross-generational community by considering the experiences of the body and the possibilities for interaction between the groups. Particular attention will be paid to spatial or sensory needs as required from the architectural environment. Differences in physical capacity of the disparate groups will be considered as a way to judge the validity of physical space design as a bridge over the social and generational gap.
