Actual-play tabletop roleplaying game podcasts offer a unique glimpse into the construction, exploration, and performance of queer identity. In particular, the use of oral storytelling and the use of folkloric artifacts within this podcast genre become key insights into how the queer community creates and performs its identity, connects its members into a cohesive community, and transmits its cultural information to both members and others. The ability of these podcasts to achieve this include how the storyteller/audience relationship is created - an extension of the oral folktale genre. In effect, the stories told by these podcasts are a key part of expressing queer identity and exploring the ways it is performed in several variations: the folk artifacts that communicate gender and sexuality, the performances of characters by their respective players, and the narrative structures created by the gaming systems themselves. To explore these elements, I examine Fast Times at D&D High, a podcast that features a diverse cast of players - both in terms of gender identity and sexualities, as well as race - and explores the early stages of identity creation through a group of high school teens navigating their world of magic and their queerness.
