Not seeing students' English usage as processes in a vacuum, this study is contextualized onto three levels- the macro-level of market driven globalized context, the meso-level of Chinese College English learning context, and the micro-level of individual learners in their given contexts. Under the influence of these different contexts, this study is designed as a phenomenological study with the aim to understand the phenomenon of English learning and teaching experiences, perceptions, and identity constructions of ten English major students in China through online interviews. In order to fulfill that aim, the investment model of Darvin and Norton (2015) provides a solid theoretical foundation for the researcher to investigate this critical but under-researched educational phenomenon. While analyzing participants' thick and descriptive data, this dissertation also seeks to understand the power of the English language as a form of capital and the role it plays while exploring English language learning/using perceptions and identity construction issues among English major students in China's context. The findings of the dissertation include not only how participants reflect on their English learning experiences at different school stages, but also how they exert their sense of agency, and re-construct their English learner/user identity in their new English teaching context. By providing a critical and multi-layered approach (global, local, and individual), findings also demonstrate how English language operates in Chinese society and how English, being perceived as a form of invested capital, shapes and is shaped by current English major students/English teachers in China.
