Microchannel heat sinks with hybrid geometric configurations are developed to improve flow boiling stability. Two types of hybrid microchannel heat sinks are experimentally investigated, hybrid microchannel-microgap heat sinks based on the expanding microchannel flow cross-section stabilization technique, and periodic stepped fin microchannel (PSFMC) heat sinks based on the interconnected microchannel stabilization technique. Heat sinks belonging to both configurations are benchmarked against conventional straight microchannel (SMC) and microgap (MG) heat sinks. While hybrid microchannel-microgap heat sinks improve flow boiling stability compared to SMC by promoting vapour expansion in the forward streamwise direction, their heat transfer performance is comparatively inferior to SMC due to the considerable removal of fins towards the downstream. Whereas, the PSFMCs not only improve flow boiling stability by limiting vapour backflow on account of span-wise vapour expansion, but also enhance two-phase heat transfer performance compared to SMC particularly at lower mass fluxes.
