The letters Paul wrote to Timothy are primarily grouped with the letter to Titus and called the Pastoral Epistles. The implication of the title is the letters were written to a pastor serving in a local church in Ephesus. Yet, Timothy is never called a pastor. He is called away from the church in Ephesus in 2 Timothy 4:8. A biblical study of the life of Timothy reveals he was one of the most trusted missionary partners of Paul from Acts 16 through the end of Paul's life (2 Timothy 4:6-8). The present research seeks to answer the question, "What is the missionary purpose of Paul's two letters to Timothy?" If Paul's goal in writing the letters was to help the church in Ephesus, he might have written 2 Ephesians. Instead, Paul wrote two letters to a trusted and faithful missionary partner who had been left in Ephesus on a missionary assignment. The proposed thesis of the present research is that Paul wrote the letters to Timothy to prepare him to carry-on the missionary task that had been entrusted to Paul by God, which Paul then entrusted to Timothy. The chosen research methods for the present research are based upon two primary methods. First, the researcher conducted a biblical theological study of the two letters. The focus of a biblical theological study is to discern what the author says and why he says it. This research method allowed the letters to reveal the content of what was written. A strong biblical theological study is based upon a strong hermeneutic. Therefore, the second method used is a literal-historical-grammatical hermeneutical method of interpretation. This hermeneutical method is the most appropriate method for allowing the researcher to discover what Paul said and why he said it. The findings of the research concludes that the letters have a strong missionary content. In 1 Timothy Paul frames his letter to Timothy by reminding Timothy he has been entrusted with the missionary task just as Paul was (1 Tim. 1:11-12, 18; 6:20-21). The second letter begins with the same reminder and command to remain faithful to what had been committed to Timothy (2 Tim. 1:13-14). 2 Timothy 4:1-5 concludes with a concise summary of the task assigned to Timothy, which was to preach the word. The research shows the remaining content of the letters reveal Paul's goal of preparing his missionary partner for continuing the missionary task after Paul is finished.
