Most scholars recognize that Jesus was believed to be divine very early and in a Jewish context. But how much continuity is demonstrable between this early belief and Jesus' own claims? In this dissertation, I investigate the kind of authority Jesus claimed to possess by examining highly evidenced data from scenes potentially reflected in Mark 2:1-12 and 14:53-65. Chapter one situates the present study in the current conversation and reveals my thesis: There is continuity between Jesus' claims and the early Christian belief in him as a divine figure because some of Jesus' words and deeds were likely interpreted by his Jewish adversaries as unparalleled claims to possess divine authority. Chapter two explores seven theoretical and seven methodological considerations for historians investigating ancient texts concerning the historical Jesus. Here, I seek to conduct my investigation using a similar approach to that used by historians outside biblical scholarship. The core of the present study is comprised of three key sections: Critical analysis of Mark 2:1-12, 14:53-65, and a synthesis of highly evidenced data by which competing hypotheses are analyzed. Chapter three investigates Mark 2:1-12 and demonstrates that it is very probable that Jesus was accurately remembered as a unique miracle worker who claimed to forgive sin. While some have challenged the plausibility of the scribal blasphemy accusation, there is no conclusive evidence among Greco-Roman miracle workers or early Jewish figures- including priests or prophets like Samuel, Daniel, or the Jew in The Prayer of Nabonidus-suggesting anyone other than God was believed to forgive sins.Chapter four investigates Mark 14:53-65 and demonstrates it is very probable that Jesus was accurately remembered as claiming to be the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed, and predicting that the high priest and council members would one day see him seated at God's right hand, coming on the clouds as the eschatological Son of Man. This implied a claim to possess divine authority in heaven to judge sins-a claim that was unique even among human luminaries. While some have challenged the authenticity of Jesus' exchange with the high priest, no compelling evidence suggests that the exchange is inauthentic.Chapter five synthesizes 10 highly evidenced data points gleaned from both Markan texts, identifies representative theories proposed in the 21st century, and weighs each view using the method and scale discussed in chapter two. I analyze four key theories and find the hypothesis that Jesus claimed to possess a kind of divine authority-rather than a merely human kind of authority similar to that of prophets, priests, or even "idealized" humans-emerged as the best explanation for all 10 data points. Thus, the present study supports my thesis. This also reveals a category of divine authority across key functions in the sayings of the historical Jesus, further suggesting some continuity between the early belief in Jesus as a divine figure and Jesus' own claims.
