The picture frame is a centuries-old art form, yet they have become mainly another background object of everyday life. Through an instrumental case study, this research explores the concept of sustainable development pathways inside the Picture Framing Industry (PFI) as of 2019. The primary focus is on what type of dialogue is being publicly offered to stakeholders by manufacturers and trade associations regarding sustainable development. A secondary focus is on how understanding the roles and involvement of stakeholders as adult learners can propel education initiatives throughout the industry. With little more than 10 years to reach the UN 2030 Agenda, all design industries should be actively applying the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This research ultimately found notable gaps in dialogue and education in the North American PFI. As of 2019, there was not a single educational presentation, paneled discussion, or seminar available through manufacturers or direct trade associations that outlines anything related to sustainability. Because picture framing is a niche industry positioned between the broader architecture, furniture, and interior design industries, it has a more significant responsibility towards sustainable stewardship. The ability for the Picture Framing Industry (PFI) to learn from and inspire other, broader design industries is paramount to the future of all the stake holders involved. The findings of this research will propel a dissemination strategy that will straddle both professional and academic interests.
