This thesis is a collection of three standalone microeconomic papers on firm innovation, corruption and growth in Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The important role of innovation in economic growth was emphasised in (Schumpeter, 1934), then widely discussed in a large range of literature on innovation and production (Acs and Audretsch, 1988; Grossman and Helpman, 1993; Acs and Audretsch, 1988; Hall and Rosenberg, 2010). The term 'innovation' describes technical changes in many economic activities (Hall and Rosenberg, 2010). Innovation can be defined as a new product, new technology, new process or any improvement of existing products and services through R&D, creativity, and knowledge (Moustaghfir and Schiuma, 2013; OECD, 2009). Innovation is a critical factor in Vietnamese SMEs in dealing with challenges from both domestic and international factors. Understanding the relationship between innovation, trade, and other determinants of growth contributes to the ongoing debate on the importance of SME innovations in making them more competitive and higher profitable for their long-term development (Llanto, 2013). Chapter 2 (Paper 1) investigates the determinants of innovation in Vietnamese SMEs using the SME's surveys from 2005 to 2015. The linear probability model fixed effects (LPM FE) and logit fixed effects (Logit FE) model are used to estimate the impacts of firm, industry and trade characteristics on innovation in Vietnam manufacturing SMEs. The empirical results reveal that larger-sized SMEs have a higher investment demand, spend more on research and development (R&D), and have higher-skilled managers who are more likely to innovate. However, the impact of firm size on innovation varies, depending on the type of innovation and the interactions with other internal and external factors. Unlike previous studies on innovation in Vietnam, this chapter captures firm characteristics and international trade impacts on firm innovation from 2005 to 2015. Whilst there is not much difference in the probability of innovation across industries, international trade characteristics have considerable effects in determining innovation in manufacturing in Vietnam. The findings are consistent with Schumpeter (1934)'s theory of innovation. These results also contribute to the existing literature on endogenous growth and innovation by providing new empirical evidence in the ongoing discussion of the determinants of innovation in manufacturing SMEs in Vietnam.Chapter 3 (Paper 2) examines how firms transform innovation outputs into growth. Using the same Vietnamese SMEs data sets, two-step quantile regressions (2SQR) are employed to explore explanations behind success and failure in transforming innovation into firm growth. First, the relationship between the three types of innovation (product innovation, product improvement, and process innovation) and growth varies by quantiles and depends upon growth measurements (sales growth, labour productivity growth and employment growth). Secondly, over the period, corruption significantly affects firm growth, and its effect is more evident in young and networking firms. Thirdly, other firm characteristics such as total assets, investment, managers' education and exports significantly affect innovation and firm growth. Although young SMEs in Vietnam are more innovative and often pay more bribes than their older counterparts, they also lack resources and face a higher risk of failure in turning innovation knowledge into successful growth.
