Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) are at risk of delays in language acquisition due to a lack of access to language in the natural environment (Paul, 2009; Spencer & Meadow-Orlans, 1996). Many factors impact language outcomes for children who are DHH, including age of identification, degree of hearing loss, age of intervention, maternal level of education, parent involvement in intervention, and parent linguistic input (Ching et al., 2010; Desjardin et al., 2006; Moeller, 2000; Tomblin et al., 2015; Vohr et al., 2011; Yoshinaga-Itano et al., 1998). This dissertation utilized a nonconcurrent, multiple baseline across participants design to investigate the efficacy of an adapted version of the teach-model-coach-review (Kaiser & Roberts, 2013b) intervention approach. Intervention was delivered via telehealth to train four caregivers of young children who are DHH to implement targeted Facilitative Language Techniques (FLTs). Results of the study indicate that caregivers of children who are DHH can be successfully coached to implement FLTs with their children. The children's developmentally appropriate vocalizations also increased in tandem with caregiver FLTs.Additionally, analysis of samples collected via full-day pre- and post-intervention LENA recordings revealed modest increases in caregiver FLT use in the natural environment. Further, caregivers increased their use of quality responses to their children. Implications of the findings, limitations, and future directions are discussed.
