This study investigates motivational influences in Chinese interracial marriage. It examines the influences of parental relationships, parental identification, acculturation, and the degree to which rejection of specific cultural and sex-role expectations play a role in the choice of interracial marriage. Forty interracially married Chinese-American women were compared with a control group of 40 intraracially married Chinese-American women on these motivational influences. The groups were comparable with respect to social class, educational level, and generational level. Interracial marriage was found to be correlated with a greater degree of American acculturation, lower ethnic identification, less adherence to traditional ethnic cultural values, and less perceived family pressure on marital choice. Women in interracially married group showed less conformity to traditional cultural values as indicated by their higher preference for bearing a female child, bearing a lower number of children, and sharing with their spouses the childcare and household duties and decision making. The results also confirmed that more interracially married Chinese-American women identified with their fathers than did intraracially married Chinese-American women. However, these interracially married women did not identify with only their fathers' masculine attributes as predicted, but with their fathers' feminine attributes as well. Additional findings showed that the majority of the interracially married women identified with both parents on masculine and feminine qualities. Contrary to expectations, no significant difference was found between the interracially and intraracially married groups on personality attributes (especially the masculine and feminine attributes), maternal identification, early parental relationships, or spousal nurturant qualities.
