Elizabethan and Yuan-Ming drama share some remarkable similarities in time presentation. First, both present a narrative time structure. Instead of using a strictly sequential action, the Elizabethan and Yuan-Ming dramatists generally organized a dramatic story chronologically. Rather than focusing on a single crisis, they selected several important scenes of a story. Secondly, the time-elements in both forms of drama primarily serve the needs of characterization and thematic revelation. There are frequent compressions, stretches, and overlaps in temporal progression just to express a character's emotion and the playwright's message. Lastly, in both, time-structure creates an imaginative reception rather than a naturalistic understanding. Common literary, aesthetic, and theatrical backgrounds all contribute to the similar temporality in these two types of theater. Structurally, both Elizabethan and Yuan-Ming drama depend heavily on traditional narrative literature. The dramatic versions borrowed the chronological structure from the narrative source stories. Aesthetically, both Elizabethan and Yuan-Ming drama emphasize subjective expression rather than objective imitation. A fascination with the human nature made the Elizabethan dramatists focus on character instead of plot in dramatic writing. The lyrical tradition of Yuan-Ming drama caused the Yuan-Ming playwrights to concentrate on emotional expression rather than scenic imitation. Architecturally, the similar stage construction of these two types of theater made it impossible to create life-like spatiality and temporality. Spatiality was connected to the mutability of the universe, and temporality became an abstract of human history. Finally, the similar high valuation of the audience's imaginative cooperation brought a validity to the non-realistic temporal presentation in these two types of theater.
