The purpose of this study was to explore the role that higher education plays in the immigration process for Chinese students and scholars from Mainland China. Three research questions were investigated: (a) What factors influence the decision of Chinese students and scholars to come to the United States? (b) What factors influence Chinese students and scholars to establish residency in the United States? (c) What role does higher education play in facilitating the immigration process for Chinese students and scholars? This study was based on a series of interviews that revealed the factors impacting the immigration process of Chinese students and scholars. The author conducted in-depth, open-ended interviews of ten Chinese students and scholars and used an explanatory multiple-case study in the investigation of significant factors. After the data were analyzed by an iterative coding and memoing process, seven factors emerged from the findings as most important for successful immigration. Four factors emerged in the decisions of Chinese students and scholars to come the United States, and three factors emerged in the decisions of Chinese students and scholars to stay in the United States. Findings indicated that higher education played a significant role as it became the tool and vehicle for Chinese students and scholars to successfully immigrate to the United States. The study has implications for institutions of higher education who wish to recruit and retain Chinese students and scholars, and for students who wish to study in the United States.
