While issues related to word stress has been in hot debate in recent Chinese linguistic studies, no agreement has been reached on the fundamental question: Is there word stress in Standard Mandarin? To address this issue, this dissertation tries to answer five questions: 1) what is the definition of word stress? 2) is there word stress in Standard Mandarin? 3) if there is, what are its phonetic realizations and auditory cues? 4) what is its phonological performance, distribution, and levels? and 5) does the so-called word stress have a linguistic and typological meaning?Chapter one and two introduce and differentiate related concepts, provide a comprehensive literature review, and set up the two targets of this study, namely the two-level word stress hypothesis and the three-level word stress hypothesis. Many believe the full tone syllable is strong on stress level while the neutral tone is weak, and that there is a mid-level for syllables that stand in between.Chapter three and four falsify the three-level hypothesis through acoustic and perceptual experiments. The acoustic experiments find that the pitch performances of syllables with full tones don't have categorical differences, and the perceptual experiments show that native speakers cannot detect stress unless there is a neutral tone. Therefore, the three-level hypothesis is ruled out.Chapter five presents the differences between qingsheng and qingyin through phonological analyses to rule out the two-level hypothesis. Qingsheng is a tonal process which applies tonal rules like neutralization, tone sandhi, and tone spreading, while qingyin is a metrical process which applies metrical rules such as clash and lapse. Therefore, qingsheng does not equal qingyin, hence syllables with tones do not equal stress, and the strong-weak pattern caused by qingsheng is different from that derived from stress alternation. Chapter six examines the differences among the three language types classified based on their super-segmental features on word level and finds the typological continuum model works both synchronically and diachronically. The language types can be differentiated in many aspects, such as their essential nature, the internal hierarchy, the culminative and the obligatory prominence feature, their predictability, etc. With all features tested, Mandarin stands solidly as a tonal language without linguistically meaningful systematic word stress.
