Court advocacy for domestic violence (DV)/intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors has led to better victim outcomes and has a positive impact on recidivism in specialized DV/IPV courts. However, little is known about the advocates experiences in specialized DV/IPV courts from their perspective. This study was designed to understand the roles advocates have and the contributions they feel they are making to promote the needs of survivors, the court, and the community at large in addressing DV/IVP. This qualitative study utilizing generic inquiry guided by radical and intersectional feminist lenses explored the experiences of court advocates assigned to specialized DV/IVP courts. Interviews were conducted with 11 advocates from three different states working in specialized DV/IPV courts. No demographic information was collected to maintain complete anonymity. The 11 advocates provided rich and expansive accounts about their experiences, their roles, and their contributions within specialized DV/IPV courts. Inductive thematic analysis was utilized to identify themes from descriptions advocates provided. The seven themes were: Advocates are motivated by professional and personal factors to work with survivors of DV/IPV, advocates have many responsibilities and roles in specialized DV/IPV court, advocates provide a plethora of services in support of survivors and the specialized DV/IPV courts, advocates embrace the unique functions of specialized DV/IPV courts, advocates play an important part in their respective community response teams, advocates encounter barriers in traditional court systems versus specialized DV/IPV courts, and advocates are positioned to promote needed changes in the system. Overall, advocates provide a large array of services tailored to the individual needs of the DV/IPV survivor. They have leading roles in community education efforts in and out of court wearing numerous hats while being an integral part of their coordinated community response teams (CCR) responsible for coordinating services among providers and ensuring the needs of the survivors are addressed. Advocates portrayed an altruistic dedication to ending violence and provide unconditional support to survivors and their children. Specialized DV/IPV courts are described as innovative where the needs of survivors are met with urgency and efficiency. Survivors are heard and safety is paramount. Advocates provide survivors hope, options, and broaden the resources (access to housing, food, education, attorneys, job search, information, and referral) survivors will need to navigate their lives. Advocates remain dedicated to making transformative and positive change within their communities.
