Police brutality is an issue that has recently been brought back into the forefront of American media in 2020, however, we know that there are communities that have been experiencing unfair treatment within the entire criminal justice system for decades, including the LGBTQ+ community. The mistreatment of the queer community at the different levels of the criminal justice system is not often talked about in the mainstream, but there is plenty of evidence that suggests the community has suffered at the hands of the law for decades. From policing and law enforcement on the street level, through the court system and corrections, disparities are seen in the treatment of people with LGBTQIA+ identities. Simply existing as a queer person in America can lead to a higher likelihood of a legal interaction for a multitude of factors, mostly due to stereotypes and profiling. Through education and nationwide criminal justice reform, improvement in the relationship between the criminal justice system and the LGBTQ+ community is possible.
