Resistance as both a personal and communal survival necessity has long been a part of the narratives of Black women. Despite the poignant efforts of Black women in arenas of resistance, there remains a sizeable margin in a society where their experiences are unseen, unheard, and unacknowledged. In a qualitative, phenomenological study using Social identity Theory and Intersectionality as theoretical frameworks, twelve Black women activists share their stories toward a deep comprehension of their experiences. Participant responses were placed in context for the analysis. Context is defined through time, location, and relationship using responses from participants. Obligation and abandonment unfold as two prevailing themes in the lives of the activists. These themes are represented in their motivations, experiences, perceptions, and expectations. Recommendations for practice, policy, research, and education are provided.
