The study's purpose was to replicate and extend Sia's (1985) investigation of predictors of responsible environmental behavior (REB). Sia investigated eight predictors: (1) environmental sensitivity (ENVSENS), (2 & 3) knowledge of (KNOWACT) and skill using (SKILLACT) environmental action strategies; (4 & 5) attitudes toward pollution (ATTPOLL) and technology (ATTTECH); (6 & 7) individual (ILOC) and group (GLOC) locus of control; and (8) psychological gender role (GENROLE). Additional variables measured in this study included: (a) Demographic variables (e.g., conservation organization memberships (MBRSHIPS)); (b) Life Experience variables; (c) Cognitive variables (e.g., knowledge of environmental problems (KNOWPROB)); (d) Affective variables (e.g., economics (ATTECON), and terminal values); (e) Personality variables (e.g., individual (IEFF), and group efficacy (GEFF)); and (f) Behavior Intention variables (e.g., environmental responsibility and commitment). Initial survey data (n = 121) were collected from Sierra Club (n = 68 (SC)) and Audobon Society (n = 53 (AS)) members. Twelve respondents (REB scores: 41-51) participated in a pilot of a survey/interview procedure. The revised procedure was used with 19 respondents (REB scores: $\\geq$50). Pilot and follow-up respondent data were then combined (n = 31). Analyses explored three research questions: (1) To what degree can the prediction results for Sia's SC sample be replicated? (2) Which variables extend explanation of the variance in REB beyond that obtained using Sia's predictor variables? and (3) What is the most powerful set of predictors of REB? Results included: (1) Explained variance in REB scores using Sia's eight predictors (45.5%) was slightly larger than for Sia's SC sample (42.5%); (2) Significant differences (p $<$.001) existed between this study's SC/AS and Sia's SC sample in mean REB scores, and in results for ENVSENS, KNOWACT, SKILLACT, ATTTECH, and ILOC; (3) Additional variables significantly (p $<$.05) correlated with REB included: GEFF, IEFF, three Environmental Commitment variables, ATTECON, one Environmental Responsibility variable, MBRSHIPS, and KNOWPROB; (4) Of these, only ATTECON added significantly (p $<$.004) to the variance explained by Sia's eight predictors (R$\\sp2$ = 17.6%); (5) KNOWACT was the most powerful predictor of REB (R$\\sp2$ = 39.8%); (6) The most powerful five variable (F 5,25) prediction model included: (1) ILOC; (2) ATTECON; (3) Age; (4) the value 'Salvation'; and (5) IEFF (Total R$\\sp2$ = 70.5%).
