Mid-ocean ridges are the birthplace of nearly two-thirds of Earth's surface. Ridges spreading apart at fast (> 8 cm/year) and intermediate (>5 cm/year) rates are characterized by abundant magmatism that generates ~6-7 km thick ocean crust. This crustal rock sequence consists of basalts at the seafloor, above sheeted dikes, sitting atop 4-6 km of plutonic crust that extends to the Moho. The plutonic crust includes variably massive, sub-vertically foliated, to sub-horizontally layered gabbroic rocks. Seismic investigations of present-day magmatically robust mid-ocean ridges indicate a thin and narrow cross-axis melt lens, that overlies a zone of reduced seismic P-wave velocities that extends to the Moho. The region of low seismic velocities is thought to reflect a crystal mush (mixture of crystals and 2-40% melt). This dissertation focuses on the processes operating within that melt-mush framework that generate the full thickness of the ocean crust formed at fast and intermediate spreading ridges.
