This dissertation will discuss the design and fabrication of miniature, high-performance endoscopes, and their subsystems for visualization of the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The first chapter contains a review of publications on endoscopes which are 1mm in diameter and smaller. The first chapter then goes through a theoretical description for optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescence. The first chapter also includes a discussion of some of the engineering fundamentals that are used in the design and production of these endoscopes. The second chapter provides a summary of four different projects. The first project describes the design of a piezoelectric tube actuator and cantilevered dual-clad fiber with an intermediate mass for use in a 1.5mm diameter forward-looking, raster scanning imaging system. The second project describes a clinic-ready sub millimeter diameter (~790um) endoscope, called the Falloposcope, which uses a coherent imaging fiber bundle for reflectance and fluorescence imaging and a separate all-fiber side firing OCT probe. The third project describes 3D printing as one solution to the challenge of obtaining sub millimeter diameter, custom optical lenses while keeping production time and cost to a minimum for rapid prototyping. The fourth project is a modified version of the Falloposcope, but with a cell acquiring functionality instead of OCT.The third chapter focuses on future work to be done. The chapter begins with a description of clinical trials for which the Falloposcope has been designed and built. The chapter then describes two potential future projects which build off the present studies. The first project is incorporating a 3D printed lens into an endoscope. The second project is the design of an endoscope centered around a newly available micro detector.
