From a public's perspective, cults are often associated with fanatic behavior and marginal beliefs. However, the practices of cults do not come from nowhere. Created by a discourse of fear, of unknown and of change, cults fill a vacuum for individuals and society at large. Cults are present in every culture even before we consider comparative studies. It is hard to give an essentialist definition of what a cult is when we consider the different perspectives determined by cultural frames. However, the ethnocentric idea that a cultis a group that shares beliefs and practices that deviate from religion, can be traced back to the Medieval Age when Paganism was practiced to free society from the predominant religion. Naturally, cults build a hierarchy system of identity and values. This thesis aims to examine how cults are able to achieve the hierarchy system and further promote it by using language and power.
