Nurses are called to advocate for those they serve, and civic engagement is a way to advocate for health-related issues. However, there is sparse evidence of frequency and types of civic activities in which professional nurses engage. A review of literature found that sense of community and civic attitudes are constructs shown to influence civic participation but are not well-studied among professional nurses. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of civic engagement among nurses by examining civic engagement activities and factors that influence engagement.This descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational design studied a random sample of NYS nurses who voluntarily responded to an electronic survey (n = 474). The survey collected demographic information and data using the Civic Minded Professional Scale, Participatory Behaviors Scale, and the Psychological Sense of Community Scale. Data was analyzed using SPSS as the statistical software. Statistical techniques included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation.Nurses were found to have moderate to high levels of civic attitudes, civic engagement behaviors, and sense of community. Significant relationships were found between each pairing of variables, which included civic attitudes, civic engagement behaviors, and sense of community. Age, income, and education were all found to be related to each of those variables.As the largest and most trusted group of health care professionals, nurses are answering the call to advocate and are positioned to impact meaningful change. The findings of this research are foundational for nurses to explore ways to leverage their potential, gain power, and amplify their voices. In doing so, nursing will lead the transformation of healthcare and advance the health of the individuals, families, and communities that they serve.
