Artificial intelligence is the intelligence demonstrated by machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. The term was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956, but the question as to whether artificial intelligence has consciousness or mental beliefs began much earlier in scientific research, fiction and literature.Although there is no precise answer, there has since been some consensus on the subject. In a meeting of neuroscientists, philosophers, and computer scientists in 2001, an agreement was reached on the following proposition: "There is no known law of nature that forbids the existence of subjective feelings in artifacts designed or evolved by humans."Artificial intelligence may or may not be able to attain consciousness or hold beliefs. But for us humans, how should we regard AI if in fact they do embody humanlike qualities, and can be even said to have "mental beliefs"? One approach may be to apply animism, one of our own mental beliefs, to explore this question. Animism, the original religion of humanity, is the belief that everything, even artifacts, possesses a distinct spiritual essence. Animism is also a form of cognition that helps people form tight bonds with objects, and it is prevalent in Asia and Africa. Through animism, people may better accept the fact that artificial intelligence has become part of human society.Therefore, this thesis applies the concept and ritual practices of animism to rethink the human relationship with artificial intelligence, and consider ways for people to rebuild a primal relationship of intimacy with the surrounding world and objects. It also serves as a platform to offer examples of how design can create bridges between human and AI consciousness that acknowledge the possible existence of emotion and self-awareness in AI.While Artificial intelligence becomes increasingly intelligent and integrated into the daily life of humans, most people only see the threats of AI, ignoring the fact that deep symbiosis and cooperation is crucial in the natural world. "Life is always lived in relationship with others," as religious studies scholar Graham Harvey has stated. Therefore, it is crucial to re-think the relationship with artificial intelligence. Animism could help people walk away from a human centered world, and learn how to build respectful relationships with everyday objects. Artificial intelligence allows for this possibility.
