There is extensive evidence that underrepresentation exists concerning women of color insenior leadership positions in the information system technology (IST) industry. Though present efforts to encourage equality and diversity in the workforce, women of color continue to lead in the underrepresented populace in senior-level leadership positions in information systems technology. Social and gender bias predominates and encumbers opportunities women of color have in the attainment of senior-level leadership positions. The purpose of this descriptive case study was to describe the barriers and support systems perceived by women of color toward senior-level leadership advancement. The research sought to describe and understand the perceptions of women of color working in mid-level or senior-level positions in IST towards the barriers they encountered, strategies or lack of strategies implemented in their organizations, and the willingness to receive or give mentoring to other women of color in IST. The research was guided by the research questions, which elicited in-depth descriptions of the women of color perceptions on barriers, strategies, and mentoring in IST towards senior-level leadership positions. The qualitative descriptive case study was analyzed using the thematic analysis approach and NVivo 12. The three themes derived from analysis were: a) lack of leadership development programs for women of color, b) women of color lack senior-level mentors, and c) unique experiences of women of color. The results may be used to enhance knowledge of barriers faced by women of color and the strategies and mentoring programs needed to facilitate attainment of senior-level leadership positions in IST.
