As online education opportunities continue to grow, college readiness begins to rely more and more on technology literacy. Skeptics question the validity of online education and insist that technology has created more of a barrier for students. This opinion took center stage during the COVID-19 pandemic that started in spring 2020. Many higher education institutions converted nearly all their offerings to some form of online modality. As instructors and colleges rushed to move courses online, pedagogy and course design practices were compromised for functionality because there was minimal time and training for developing effective online courses. This study explored pedagogical theory and practices for online education and provides the experiences of several community college online instructors during the pandemic. This narrative research study shares their previous experiences and influences as online instructors and how they coped with the transition to a remote campus, met learning objectives such as building critical thinking skills, and maintained a student-centered community. The instructors interviewed were prepared because of their personal and professional experiences in online education prior to the pandemic. This study shows that understanding online pedagogy, effective course design, and personal or professional development can lead to effective online learning environments.
