My thesis involves an examination of the first written text of ancient China's pre-dynastic period. The Dao De Jing of LaoTse presented a fully developed system of philosophical thought that would influence all future writings of Traditional Chinese culture. LaoTse is said to have lived during the Spring and Autumn period, 6th century BCE. His text, however, only appears in the 4th century. This discrepancy plays a central role in the interpretation of LaoTse's work. While the Dao De Jing is one of the most widely translated works in the history of the world, it is also considered by many as too mystical in its presentation of China's ancient past. It is in this condition that my approach to the text is focused. Instead of adding to the discourse concerning the hidden meanings within the text, I have sought to uncover a coherent relationship in the archaic record for the text's origin. Accordingly, my writing is focused on the archaeological record of the central plains of East Asia, along with references to anthropological, religious, and political histories of China's pre-historic era. LaoTse's text consistently makes reference to the creation mythology of tribal cultures of the Neolithic period from both the central plains region and those that surround it. It is in this context that I found traces of resonant cultures that give a foundation for LaoTse's treatise. LaoTse's Dao De Jing is a syncretic work of mythically based cosmologies that defines the conditions of the historic period of the eastern Zhou dynasty, 771 to 476 BCE.Approved: Omar Swartz.
