Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2021.
This dissertation addresses the research question, "Is the pastor a member of a local church?" The thesis argues that the pastor is not only a local church member but this fact influences his relationship to the church and instructs his identity, role, and relationships within the church. Chapter one addresses the question and presents the thesis. A review of the literature shows this question has not been previously addressed in literature on church membership, the nature of the church, or pastoral leadership. This necessitated the research lay a broad foundation regarding membership and the nature of the church, then build an argument based on that foundation. Chapter two presents a briefhistorical overview of church membership. Chapter three examines the arguments for regenerative church membership, congregational church polity, and the pastor's connection to the local church. Key doctrinal issues are summarized. Chapter four considers the biblical descriptions of the church through an examination of the primary terms and the four major metaphors used to define the church. Chapter five probes the metaphor of the shepherd and the sheep as defining the pastor's role unique from the ecclesiological metaphors. The development ofthis metaphor across the Old and New Testaments is reviewed along with its application to the pastor's function in the local church. Chapter six summarizes the arguments building up to the thesis. Implications for how the church views the pastor and how the pastor views his relationship to the church are examined in light of the primary arguments for the membership and shepherding expectations of the pastor. Several practical implications are suggested in light of the pastor's local church membership in connection with his call to shepherd the local church.
