Isaiah 22:15-25 is an obscure oracle in which the Lord castigates Shebna and elevates Eliakim. Scholars often propose that Shebna controlled access to the king, but he shirked this responsibility in order to focus on preparing his own burial place. Therefore, scholars often regard "the key of the house of David" (Isa 22:22) as referring to Shebna's authority over who could enter the king's presence. This interpretation is then frequently utilized for interpreting the allusions to Isa 22:22 in Rev 3:7 and Matt 16:19. However, besides a few exceptions, modern interpreters have rarely recognized the temple echoes that reverberate throughout Isa 22:15-25. This study provides a fresh interpretation of Isa 22:15-25, demonstrating that the temple was a key background for Shebna's position and offense. After a temple-centric interpretation of Isa 22:15-25 is established, then a new door is opened for reconsidering the allusions to Isa 22:22 in Rev 3:7-13 and Matt 16:18-19. This study utilizes the methods of intertextuality and critical spatiality, in order to interpret these allusions and their potential implications for the conception of sacred space among some early Christ-followers. In light of the temple implications of Isa 22:15-25, the "open door" of Rev 3:8 is reevaluated. Instead of an open door to eternal salvation, this open door is found to be an opportunity to reclaim potential sacred space for God on earth. The faithful Philadelphians are already God's sacred space (1:12-13) and priests (1:6). They are now called to serve among "those who call themselves Jews" through the open door, so that some of these may become God's sacred space as well (3:8-9). In Matt 16:18-19, it is argued that Peter's key foundational role is to provide teaching that will (1) lead to Jesus' community manifesting the righteousness of the kingdom on earth, and (2) lead to other Jews following Jesus as the Messiah. Thus, the temple imagery of Isa 22:22 encourages missionary engagement in both NT contexts.
