This dissertation seeks to bring balance to existing trends in Johannine scholarship that either appropriate a virtually exclusive Christocentric reading to the Fourth Gospel or focus on reconstructing the Gospel's history and audiences. These two tendencies overlook important questions raised by John's Gospel on the problem of suffering. By analyzing fives specific scenes of believers who suffer in John, the dissertation argues for an intentional subtheme of Christian affliction in the Fourth Gospel that demonstrates God purposely ordains suffering, whether physical or mental trauma, to be endured by believers around the world as a catalyst for faith and glory.
