The general agreement about the critical role of Solomon within the DtrH often is paired with varying opinions concerning whether Solomon is presented in 1 Kings 1-11 largely positively or negatively. These range from declarations that assert his stalwart commitment to God to allegations about his murderous efforts to consolidate his political hegemony. In their bid to explain Solomon, scholars have tended to highlight one of three major structural elements within the first 11 chapters: Solomon's apostasy (11:1-6), his two visions (3:4-14, 9:1-9), and intermittently interspersed ironic elements. We propose a fourth textual component, the speeches of Solomon (8:1-61), not just as a complementary feature alongside of these others, but as the most significant textual marker within the unit. As the pivotal portion of the entire section, which offers unparalleled access to Solomon's thinking, our thesis is that carrying out a careful literary examination of Solomon's discourses in 1 Kings 8:1-61 provides the surest approach for determining how the author intended Solomon to be understood.What becomes most obvious in the speeches of Solomon is the deliberate care exhibited by the author to portray Solomon as a king who was fully devoted to God, to the covenant, and to God's redemptive purposes not only for Israel but among the nations. His resolve to emphasize Solomon's fidelity is striking in light of the seemingly ambiguous opening chapters (1:1-2:46), God's dire warning to Solomon within the second dream sequence (9:1-9), and the conspicuous ethical slide evidenced in Solomon that began in chapter 9 and culminated in the report of Solomon's open rebellion in 11:1-6. But it is unquestionable that the writer of Kings was determined to convey that as Solomon spoke in 1 Kings 8:1-61, he was a man entirely submissive to God. In particular, within the discourses themselves four characteristics in Solomon become apparent: 1) Solomon's heartfelt humility before God, 2) his absolute commitment to the covenant, 3) his wonder at the character of God, and 4) his intimacy with God as seen in his prayers.
