The Indian Pentecostal Church (IPC) is a Pentecostal denomination that began in the southern part of India, in the state of Kerala. IPC-affiliated churches are in India, the United States and all around the world. My family and I have always been members of the IPC. One of the basic doctrines of the IPC state that "tongues" is the initial evidence of "baptism in the Holy Spirit." This experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit is considered to be a second or subsequent experience to conversion. The evidence of being "baptized" or "filled" in the Holy Spirit is considered to be "tongues" or speaking in unknown languages. The subsequent experience of Holy-Spirit baptism is often induced through special "tarrying" meetings and specially "gifted" ministers. This is an experience that all believers are expected to have which consequently then, renders tongues as a requirement for every believer. Furthermore, in public or assembled worship, tongues is often exercised without restriction. Prolonged moments of "speaking in tongues" without interpretation by one or more individuals is common in public or assembled worship. This project will consider if such beliefs and practices of the IPC align with scriptural principles and offer a biblical perspective and clarification on such matters.
