Most people have no idea that First Baptist Church of Glenarden (FBCG) began from humble, meager beginnings as a home-based Bible study in 1917. Since then, the church has experienced several changes in leadership along with major ministry and culture shifts. Over the past decade, FBCG has experienced more than 100 new members joining the church each month. One of the most troubling issues that the church faces is that of assimilation. Assimilation is defined as the process by which a congregation welcomes, receives, and incorporates members, including families, into its community. The purpose of this ministry project is to develop a strategy to more effectively assimilate church members into the life and ministry of FBCG. This assimilation strategy can be used as a tool by the leaders at FBCG to motivate new and existing members to become involved in the life and ministry of this local assembly. To this end, this ministry project addresses the reasons why people leave the church and/or become inactive, highlight the great need for solid discipleship strategies, and provide a plan for properly assimilating new and existing members. After assessing the current assimilation processes, a follow-up meeting with each ministry team leader specifically will document the success of current strategies and the possible cause for ineffective assimilation results. Subsequently, an appropriate assimilation strategy will be designed and implemented, with the support of the senior pastor. This dissertation presents an overview of the current ministry problem, a statement of the ministry problem, and the rationale for doing the ministry project. While providing the project limitations and assumptions, other areas are likewise addressed including the biblical, theological, and historical foundations of the ministry project, a summary of the literature for the ministry project, methods for solving and analyzing the ministry problem, results and contributions of the ministry project, an evaluation of the ministry project, and a summary of the ministry project.
