More than 264 million people worldwide have depression, and 800,000 of them commit suicide annually. Due to issues such as social stigma, shortage of trained health care providers, and inadequate resources, up to 85% of all individuals with depression do not receive treatment for their condition. In the United States, depression is the 10th leading cause of death and led to the death of 47,511 individuals in 2019. The purpose of this quantitative study was to use an aerobic exercise intervention to reduce symptoms of depression in adults ages 20-65 years old who are patients in outpatient clinics. The study included a quasi-experimental design to examine the efficacy of aerobic walking exercise on the depression levels of the participants. The depression levels of the adults ages 20-65 years (n = 24) in the convenience sample were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) before and after the intervention. The aerobic exercise selected was 30 minutes of brisk walking 3 days per week for 6 weeks. The paired t-test was used to measure the pre-and post-intervention PHQ-9 scores which showed a statistically significant reduction in depression levels; t(24) (M = 7.04, SD = 2.35); t(24) = 4.433, p < .001, of the 95% confidence interval [1.844, 5.072]. Based on these findings, brisk walking is an effective treatment intervention in reducing the severity of depression.
