This dissertation study was designed to explore and examine the perception of professional athletes' social activism on their careers: financial, social, and longevity. This research study and data analysis was conducted in the spring of 2019 through the summer of 2020. The methodology for this study is phenomenological research designed, interpretative phenomenological analysis and idiographic approach. The researcher utilized a semi-structured interview along with open-ended questions. The demographics of this study were four African American males who played in the National Football League (NFL) between 2010 thru 2020. The qualitative study identified the challenges that professional athletes face by using their platform for social advocacy. Based on the findings, the emerging themes are: using your platform for change, financial losses and social advocacy gains, athletes activism on their mental health and the blackballed effects. The results from this study have demonstrated that professional athletes who use their platform for social activism are affected financially, socially, and career longevity.
