Sport is a popular leisure activity for youth (Aspen, 2014), and offers many benefits for youth athletes that can contribute to their personal development. Many factors are understood to contribute to motivation for participating in sports for youth with and without a physical disability. This paper reports on a dissertation utilizing a qualitative approach that focuses on exploring parent perceptions of motivation for participating in a sports program by their child athlete with a physical disability. Four themes emerged as responses to the research question for this study: what do parents believe motivates their child with a physical disability to participate in a sports program? Themes include having a community, being able to be an athlete on a competitive sports team, being able to achieve goals and successes, and making a mutual decision with parents to participate. Discussion focuses on implications for application and future research.
