Due to the greater physical demands of practice and strength and conditioning protocols, athletes require a greater energy intake than a sedentary population. Whether athletes are consuming adequate calories and macronutrients (protein, fat, or carbohydrates) has therefore come into question. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Division I collegiate track athletes (events: high jump, hurdles, javelin, long jump, multi-event, and pole vault) consumed recommended energy and macronutrient intakes during the mid-season. METHODS: Ten division I track and field athletes (n = 7 females, n = 3 males, age = 20.3 + 1.4 years, 65.7 + 11.1 kg) participated in two 24-hour recall interviews conducted with the dietary analysis tool for athletes (DATA). Each athlete was weighed at their first interview and the 24-hour recall lasted approximately 20 minutes. DATA results were then compared to recommendations by the international society of sports nutrition (ISSN) for macronutrients and to the calorie recommendations made by the DATA system. A modified version of the combined events in athletic development (CEAD) survey was also used to assess common dietary habits. RESULTS: Compared to ISSN recommendations, athletes were inadequate in carbohydrates (p < .001), adequate in fat (p < .01), and adequate in protein intake (p = .17). Athletes approached significance for inadequate energy balance (p = .05) when compared to recommendations by DATA. CONCLUSION: In summary, participants were found to be in a negative energy balance, consumed inadequate amounts of carbohydrates, and adequate amounts of protein and fat. Future research is still needed to assess dietary intake over a long-term period, such as a season, to determine whether these trends are consistent across a season.
