The use of fringe financial products (FFP) such as payday loans, pawn loans, and check cashing services negatively impact the financial well-being of consumers who find themselves in a cycle of debt that can be difficult and expensive to escape. African Americans are targeted by the FFP industry through advertising and retail storefront locations. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is charged with protecting American consumers from harmful financial products. This research seeks to discover the impact that use of FFP has on consumers' self-reported financial well-being. Using secondary data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau consisting of a robust data set from a national survey of 6,394 U.S. consumers, the research found a statistically significant negative impact to financial well-being scores for consumers who use FFP. This study discusses the targeted marketing of harmful products to vulnerable consumer groups and suggests implications for policymakers as well as financial educators and institutions as the country grapples with the low economic mobility of the African American population.
