The rate of obesity among adolescents in the United States has increased at a dramatic pace, along with the prevalence of weight-related diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 20.6% of adolescents aged 12-19 are obese. Since obese adolescents face medical, psychological, and reproductive health challenges, early intervention is imperative in preventing short-term and long-term morbidity. Given that behavioral and environmental factors influence obesity, primary care providers are best placed to advocate for a behavioral program that increases physical activity and improves nutrition among at-risk adolescents. The study aimed to investigate the impact of adding a motivational interviewing (MI) approach to improving adherence to lifestyle changes for weight reduction among obese adolescents in the primary care setting. A convenience sample of 40 participants was enrolled. After three months of intervention, weight reduction was statistically significant (p = .004). The mean weight reduction was .52 kilograms. There was a significant reduction in consumption of high energy foods, an increase in physical activity, and motivation (p = .001). The study findings may contribute to existing knowledge by providing further evidence of the effectiveness of MI, in addition to education, on the management of adolescent obesity.
