Asthma affects five million children under the age of 17 years with each asthma attack costing $3,266 per person. During a healthcare event, especially in the pediatric population, the interaction between healthcare providers and primary caregivers is influenced by a variety of factors. The researcher used a multiple case-study method to describe the experiences of primary caregivers seeking healthcare for their child with asthma in the South Texas healthcare system. In-depth, individual interviews were conducted with five primary caregivers and six healthcare providers using semi-structured interview guides. There was one overarching theme of "Everything working together" and three themes, "getting the appointment," "during the appointment," and "follow-up," with 12 subthemes that emerged from the interviews. Primary caregivers and healthcare providers described the theme of "getting the appointment," which included the subthemes of scheduling the appointment, office hours, provider availability, transportation, and insurance. Primary caregivers and healthcare providers also described "during the appointment." The subthemes for during the appointment included communication, health literacy, time, continuity of care, and referrals. Finally, primary caregivers and healthcare providers described follow-up. The subthemes for follow-up included the perceived need by the primary caregivers for care and school requirements. All subthemes fell into different levels of the socioecological model and described the healthcare visit. The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that affect a healthcare visit and how they function within the socioecological model to ensure that children with asthma are able to receive the care they need.
