Healthcare organizations are moving towards more patient engagement and transparent data reporting, as well as improved productivity, efficiency, and patient satisfaction. Existing patient portals offer many benefits but have yet to be properly attuned to an inpatient setting in a way that supports hospital-based care and its dynamic and complex setting. The problem addressed in this study was the limited adoption of patient portals by patients and limited understanding of how they perceive the usefulness of utilizing a patient portal during a hospital visit. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to determine the perception of patients on how the patient portals impact their experience during hospital visits. The conceptual framework driving this research was the technology acceptance model (TAM). Interviews were conducted with sample group to evaluate experiences with patient portals and their perceived usefulness of it during their hospital visit. The sample population consisted of patients who had recently visited the hospital or had experience using a patient portal. Fourteen participants completed semi structured interviews to provide information about their experiences with the technology. Data was analyzed manually by reviewing interview transcripts. This review included reading and rereading the relevant data to create codes based on participants' responses. The results of this study revealed several factors that impact patients' attitudes and perceptions towards patient portals. The results indicated that most participants perceived patient portals as useful tools for managing care; however, there were mixed opinions about the value of the portal in the hospital setting. Based on the findings, the researcher identified three recommendations for practice and future research. In conclusion, patient portals are evolving in nature beyond single health management tools that complement certain aspects of care into a more integrated tool that facilitates the entire continuum of care.
