Objectives: To assess the effects of aquatic exercises in comparison to land-based exercises on bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, cardiovascular health, and self-efficacy postmenopausal women. Methods: A database search occurred from September 2019 to February 2021. A single reviewer selected studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Studies measured bone density, blood pressure, and used the Short-Form 36 of the Medical Outcome Study (SF-36), Osteoporosis Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) and Menopause Quality of Life (MENQOL) questionnaires. Results: Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria, involving 529 postmenopausal females. Aquatic exercises displayed a medium effect size for each outcome measure. Homogeneity was found for bone density at the lumbar spine and blood pressure, while heterogeneity was identified for bone density at the femoral neck and self-efficacy among the studies. Conclusion: The study revealed that aquatic exercises demonstrated improvements in bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, blood pressure, and self-efficacy that were superior to land-based exercises.Study Design: This is a meta-analysis of clinical studies comparing the effects of aquatic and land-based physical therapy exercises on bone mineral density, cardiovascular fitness, and self-efficacy in postmenopausal women.
