Contemporary Basque Country lays between two different countries and holds three different language policies, impacting many aspects of life. Research about the region of Iparralde in France seems to be less prevalent than that of the Basque regions in Spain. This article attempts to fill the gaps in knowledge by including all three of the Basque regions. The purpose of this research is to study the impact that access to an education in Euskara has on Basque cultural identity. I also wanted a better understanding of the level of satisfaction with the current varying political and educational systems that govern Basque Country. Sixteen semi-structured interviews with participants from the three Basque regions (Iparralde, the BAC, and Navarra) were conducted by myself and my research partner during 2018. I also conducted participant observations and utilized rapid ethnographic techniques. Data from this research indicates that obtaining an education in Euskara as a child may impact concepts of Basque identity. Further research should be conducted to confirm these differences in conceptions of identity. Euskara advocates should avoid embracing language- based conceptions of identity, which could lead some to ignore the complexities of contemporary Basque people. Access to a primary education in Euskara is becoming more prevalent in the Basque regions, but there are still some areas of Iparralde and southern Spain where primary education may be more difficult to obtain. However, higher education is much more difficult to access, and the only university that offers a variety of programs in Euskara is located in San Sebastian. It would be beneficial for Basque people to have easier access to higher education in Euskara. Participants had mixed feelings about independence and political change. While a majority did favor independence, many thought it was unrealistic. My interest in these findings on the development of a Basque identity were not only intellectual; it was also very personal.
