Increasing attention has been paid to corporate social responsibility (CSR) from many walks of life. Despite the rich literature on CSR, most studies have ignored a group of emerging entities: entrepreneurial firms. An entrepreneurial firm refers to an organization that innovates in products or services under uncertain situations, which is quite different from other firms. Paradoxically, while some entrepreneurial firms have embedded social responsibility into their mission, some are criticized for their ethical lapses. Hence, two key questions are addressed in this dissertation: (1) What are the determinants for entrepreneurial firms to invest in CSR? And (2) what is the impact of corporate social performance on financial performance in entrepreneurial firms? In this thesis, Chapter 1 presents the general background of the research and raises two research questions. The research design and contribution of the thesis is briefly introduced in this section. Chapter 1 also provides the organization of the thesis. In Chapter 2, a literature review on CSR in entrepreneurial firms is conducted. An overview on CSR and entrepreneurship is presented respectively. Prior studies on CSR in the context of entrepreneurial firms are then summarized and reviewed. Gaps in the extant literature are identified, which lead to research questions of this thesis. In Chapter 3, the determining factors of CSR investment decisions in entrepreneurial firms are studied. Employing real options logic, both the uncertainties in the external environment and flexibilities of entrepreneurial firms will influence the decisions of CSR investments. The uncertainties in the external market positively affect the decision to engage in CSR practice. In addition, given the specific characteristics of entrepreneurial firms, there is a U-shaped relationship between firm slack resources and the likelihood that the entrepreneurial firms will engage in CSR practices. Moreover, such relationship is moderated by the R&D investment decision and ownership structure of the entrepreneurial firms. This study provides a multi-faceted analysis on the influential factors of CSR decision made in entrepreneurial firms, which explores the specific pattern of CSR investment decision in such context. The application of real options perspective also enables the integration of specific characteristics of entrepreneurial firms into CSR decision making process.Chapter 4 explores the impact of corporate social performance (CSP) on financial performance of entrepreneurial firms (CFP). Adopting the Yin-Yang balancing perspective, a dynamic model is developed for the relationship between CSP and CFP. Through the Yin-Yang balancing mechanism, an S-curved relationship is proposed for the CSP-CFP relations in entrepreneurial firms. Furthermore, the moderating roles of R&D activities and firm size are accounted for, which takes characteristics of entrepreneurial firms into account. The mechanism through which CSP exerts influence on CFP is explored in this study. Besides, the empirical findings extend the understanding of CSP-CFP relationship and provides insights for entrepreneurs. In Chapter 5, main findings of the thesis are concluded. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed in this section. The limitations of the thesis and future directions are also listed, and conclusion is drawn in the last chapter.
