The need for an effective coaching philosophy is an often-overlooked area in the field of coaching, despite the numerous benefits identified in literature (Burton & Raedeke, 2008; Cassidy et al., 2009; Gould et al., 2017; Lyle, 2002; Bennie & O'Connor, 2010). Although many coaches report having a philosophy, the actual number of coaches who utilize their philosophy are limited (McCallister et al., 2000), creating a gap in theory to practice (Light, 2008; Lyle, 2002). The purpose of this study was to shed light on coaches' experiences of coach education and the impact this has on their coach philosophy development and utilization in practice. A secondary purpose is to understand athletes' views of their Head Coach's coaching philosophy through their experiences with their Head Coach. The researcher interviewed two Division One coaches and two athletes from each coach's team, for a total of four athletes. Using Braun and colleagues (2016) six-phase model of thematic analysis, five major themes were identified: Comprehension, Communication, Performance, Support, and Life Experiences. Support yielded two sub-themes-Athlete Development and Identity, while Life Experiences yielded five sub-themes-Death, Former Athlete, Coaches, Informal Coach Education, and Formal Coach Education. Athletes' reports of varying philosophies demonstrated a lack of effective implementation of their coach's philosophy.
