This action research case study analyzed upper elementary and middle school educator perceptions and behaviors related to embedding executive function skills into their core curriculum after participating in a 6-week long PLC on the topic of embedding executive function skills into the general curriculum. As part of the PLC process, the educators participated in four professional development sessions based on a presurvey they took before the initial training, a focus group discussion, and a reflection survey. The study defined executive function as the collective cognitive processes of goal setting, planning, and organizing; using working memory; adaptability or shifting focus; and self-monitoring or inhibitory control. The findings from the study yielded two primary themes: an increase in educator awareness of executive function and an increase in knowledge of strategies to teach executive function skills. This study provides a framework for future professional development for educators to increase their knowledge of executive function and how to embed executive function strategies into the core classroom.
