Preservation of historical sites is important not only for the exploration, understanding, and experience of historical events and movements but is the primary way in which we interact with the past and safeguard it for future generations. But what if historical sites are digitally preserved? Would it be a tragedy if the physical buildings were destroyed by earthquakes, hurricanes, or other natural or human-made disasters? Through the use of a stated preference survey, this paper aims to explore the relationship between digital and physical preservation to help inform conservation practices. I do this by eliciting the willingness-to-pay (WTP) for two different types of preservation, from American citizens, for a subset of nationally significant sites called National Historic Landmarks. I find that there seems to be a substitute relationship between the two preservation types and an average WTP value, for full preservation, of $202 per person.
