The value and understanding of one's sexual identity formation is often underrepresented in art therapy research, in particular with lesbian-identified women. Previous research with lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals suggest lower levels of self-esteem, and reports of increased mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety (Meyer, 2003). This is a result of minority and environmental stress and the challenges associated with the stigma and oppression of homosexual identities (Meyer, 2003). On the contrary, the results of this study concluded that all participants identified their visual image as a representation of positive lesbian identity. This research also found value in the participant's responses to the post art making questions, adding to the richness and the value of the individual stories of their sexual identity formation. Twelve participants created images related to their sexual identity formation through both visual and verbal methods of inquiry from a phenomenological lens. Additionally, an Art Therapy doctoral cohort was used in the evaluation of the data. The research exposed vibrant visual data along with rich stories of sexual identity formation.
