Much work has been done on the subject of ethics in Islam and Buddhism. However, the primary texts in Islam and Buddhism lack a theory of moral philosophy that systematically and critically analyzes the moral teachings. My dissertation attempts to find underlying moral principles in Islam and Buddhism, arguing that Islamic and Buddhist moral teachings offer an alternative approach to contemporary debates on ethics; they both approach ethics as a type of moral phenomenology. I will seek to demonstrate that Buddhism and Islam both emphasize the first-person moral experience and the transformation it brings. This project contributes to the literature given the present lack of research on this topic. In addition, the investigation helps us to discuss moral topics from different angles. Indeed, besides its benefits on a theoretical level, on a practical level, discussing Islamic ethics will make room for a new understanding of Islam: one based on ethics. This will help ensure that Muslims tolerate others' beliefs. Moreover, this dissertation attempts to initiate a dialogue between Buddhism and Islam, since interactions between the two are in many cases rare or non-existent.
